October is SOCKtober!

Posted on

You’ve maybe heard it mentioned or saw it on the calendar already this year… And now it’s finally time! October is SOCKtober!

Socks are in style year-round. But October is extra special! SOCKtober is a time for reaching out to those in need starting from the feet up!

Did you know that one of the most requested items at homeless shelters is socks? Who knew such a small thing could make a huge difference? And with winter and the holidays coming, it's especially important for us to do what we can to keep hearts and feet warm. This is one chance for us to around our community and Calgary.

So, what is SOCKtober? During the month of October, École Edwards is collecting NEW socks – whatever size, style or type! At the end of the month, they will be donated to different community outreach to help those in need as we approach the colder months.

Note: we often have families also donate winter items like gloves or toques which are also appreciated!

This year our goal is to simply collect as many NEW socks as we can. Note: Typically, we set a number goal but with money being tighter for many families the last couple of years, we are just going to celebrate what we can get, and man does our community typically step up! Grade teams, you are more than welcome to have a little team competition and see which class can gather the most!

For the 2024/2025 school year we collected 2300 pairs of NEW socks:

  • Men’s 659
  • Women’s 556
  • Kid’s 790
    •    Girls 307
    •    Boys 483
  • Unknown 25 (unwrapped) *This went to the school clothing program
  • Shirt 1
  • Toques 10
  • Gloves/Mitts 15

We made a difference for 2 different charities:

Half of the sock collection went to Airdrie community Links.

The other half (and the winter wear) went to the Fear is Not Love society (new name for the Calgary Women's Shelter) which Community Links directs members of Airdrie to if they can't help them.

Both places talked about how they are seeing more families struggling and that the donations were a huge deal to those that receive items.

Both places were so appreciative at the generosity and absolutely amazed that everything was new.

The difference this "small" act makes is HUGE! Click here to Learn the story of how Socktober got started Socktober! Learn-the-story
